ABSTRACT

The non-renewable character of fossil fuels and the use of these resources for the operation of thermal machines are factors that must be considered, due to the negative impact on the environment, since as a product of diesel and oxygen combustion generate polluting gases such as HC, CO, NOX and CO2. This work describes the use of castor oil that comes from non-food vegetable raw materials, in different concentrations to determine the performance and performance of an internal combustion engine at different rates. To evaluate this research, a test protocol was established that was developed on a dynamometer, which allowed determining specific vehicle parameters such as power, torque, fuel consumption and polluting emissions. The validity of this research is based on the calculation of the thermal efficiency of the vehicle based on the calorific value and specific fuel consumption, as well as the brake power. The latter in relation to the torque exerted by the engine and the speed of rotation. With the concentration at 10% the maximum value of the power is 79 HP compared to the nominal value of 77.5 HP according to the technical data sheet of the vehicle is a significant value, it indicates that castor oil acted as an additive. The CO emissions were 2200 ppm when using the concentration at 5%, according to the EURO III standard it is within the allowed range. The thermal efficiency calculated with both concentrations is 41%, implies that it is taking better advantage of the heat generated by combustion, because the composition of the oil makes it easily flammable when combined with diesel. However, despite the successful application, there are still challenges to be solved one of them is to identify the ideal concentration of diesel - oil for the optimal operation of a vehicle.
